Özet

Objective: To ascertain the prevalence and features of restless legs syndrome (RLS) among patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) Background: Studies report a high prevalence rate of RLS among PwMS ranging from 13.3 to 65.1%. Design/Methods: We conducted a nation-wide, multicenter, prospective and a cross-sectional survey designed to reflect all of the PwMS throughout the country. Firstly, 32 demographic and clinical aspects of PwMS were evaluated, and subsequently eight characteristics of RLS for those who fulfill the RLS criteria. Results: Of the 1068 participants 178 (16,7%) experienced RLS [RLS(+)] and 890 (83,3%) did not [RLS(−)]. Among the RLS(+) 178, all but 8 patients (4,5%) were underdiagnosed in terms of RLS. Of the 170, 98 (57,7%) had ‘severe’ or ‘very severe’ RLS. The proportion of current cigarette smokers and spinal involvement was significantly higher in the RLS(+) group than in the RLS(−) group. The prevalence of RLS among PwMS did not differ by age, gender, body mass index, degree of disability, disease duration or number of attacks; nor by levels of B12 and D vitamins, ferritin, hemoglobin and hematocrit or by type of disease modifying treatment used. Conclusions: The risk of having RLS among PwMS was found to be 5 times higher than in the general population. Although more than half of the RLS (+) group had severe forms of RLS, the vast majority of patients remained underdiagnosed, showing a very low awareness of this coincidence among MS specialists. Our results reveal that RLS should be especially investigated in PwMS, particularly among those who have had spinal involvement. We conclude that MS should be included in the secondary causes of RLS, such as anemia and end-stage renal disease. Accordingly, the awareness of physicians and the treatment of underdiagnosed RLS cases may increase the quality of life of PwMS.
