Özet

European Green Deal and Circular Economy targets particularly emphasizes the renewable energy and waste management. In recent years, the production of hemp has been increasing rapidly in Turkey. As a result of this production, it is expected the generation of waste parts of hemp. The hemp hurd which has lignocellulosic structure can be an alternative source for biogas production as a renewable energy. Biogas also has different advantages such as controlling organic waste, reducing greenhouse gas and producing economical fertilizers. Therefore; in this study the use of hemp waste as a renewable energy source (biogas) has been studied. In order to increase the biogas production potential of hemp hurd, which is in lignocellulosic structure, alkali and thermal pretreatment has been applied. Dry fermentation technique which has several advantages such as higher methane yield, less thermal energy requirements, less waste water production, and lower moisture decay was used in the study. Consequently, it was observed that NaOH+thermal pretreatment increased biogas production from 81 mL CH4/gVS to 165 mL CH4/gVS. The results showed that the hemp hurd has the potential source for biogas production.
