Özet

Objective. We assessed the effect of dialysis on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status in patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD) treatment and made a comparison of these parameters between HD patients and healthy controls. Design and Methods. The oxidative stress and antioxidant status were evaluated in 40 patients with chronic renal failure before and after receiving hemodialysis; this group was compared with a control group of 40 healthy controls. Plasma peroxidation was assayed as malondialdehyde (MDA), and two enzymatic antioxidant systems were determined: Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in erythrocytes. Vitamin E, β-carotene, and vitamin C were evaluated as serum non-enzymatic antioxidants. Results. Compared to the healthy controls, the HD patients had 2-fold higher MDA levels and decreases of SOD activity by approximately 30% and of GPx activity by approximately 15%. β-carotene levels in the HD patients were slightly lower than in the controls, but vitamin C levels were approximately 40% lower than in the controls. Vitamin E levels in the HD patients were approximately 20% higher than in the healthy controls. The values in the HD patients were not significantly different in samples obtained before dialysis as compared to post-dialysis determinations. Conclusion. Determinations of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status, including vitamins and enzymes, may be useful tests to evaluate oxidative stress in HD patients. The dialysis procedure does not seem to significantly change the oxidant/antioxidant levels.
