Summary

The objective of this study was to develop a prediction model for head losses in hydrocyclone filters using Dimensional Analysis. For this purpose, seven hydrocyclone filters with 2", 2½", 3" and 4" inlet – outlet rated diameter were used to measure the friction losses at different flow rates in the laboratory. The parameters affecting the variation in head losses in filters were defined as dimensionless terms using Buckingham’s pi-theorem.

The model developed in this study accounted for 97.64% of the variation in the data with 86 degrees of the freedom. The results showed that the mathematical model may be used to determine head losses in hydrocyclone filters with an acceptable accuracy if the variables affecting this system are used within the limits defined as inlet – outlet inside diameter of 53-105 mm, diameter of cylindrical part of 200-283 mm, height of cylindrical part of 152-220 mm, bottom diameter of conic part of 52-60 mm, height of conic part of 275-644 mm.
