Özet

Today, rapid developments and advances in technology digitalized operations in manufacturing systems. The digital transformation in manufacturing systems has a significant impact on manufacturing operations. Thus, numerous industrial sectors aim to use new technological developments to maximize their manufacturing volumes, reduce their manufacturing costs, and improve their manufacturing efficiency. The Digital Twin (DT) solution is utilized to empower the industrial systems for this purpose. The Digital Twin is a virtual representation and digital informational architecture of a physical asset, process, system, or service. The digitization process and the creation of Digital Twin in manufacturing have been made possible by recent technology advancements like the smart sensors, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing (CC), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Industry 4.0. A cyber-physical system is a substantial controller in the manufacturing products process, and the effective integration of cyber-physical systems to support smart manufacturing is made possible by Digital Twin. Sensors collect data from the physical world, which is then transmitted as an input to the Digital Twin. The Digital Twin analyzes these data and transfers the outputs through virtual simulation. Thereby, potential consequences are evaluated without any cost, and problems that may occur are identified before starting the manufacturing process. A fully shaped Digital Twin helps to achieve smart manufacturing by establishing a two-way connection between virtual and physical objects and providing an effective solution for the integration of physical and cyber data. Hence, the behavior of the manufacturing system can be optimized at each stage of its life cycle by the Digital Twin. Thereby, the product that will be used in the real world is produced in its most perfect form. The Digital Twin can serve as the foundation of a decision support system (DSS). Thus, it can give an idea about possible optimizations in production. DSS analyzes vast quantities of data, developing in-depth knowledge that may be used for problem-solving and decision-making. Artificial Intelligence (AI) empowers effective decision support systems and enables the capability to provide automatic decision-making for companies. In this chapter, the significance of Digital Twin in manufacturing will be discussed, and the current state of the art will be shown. Also, the chapter will specify how the Digital Twin is combined with the manufacturing services and highlight the various components of the Digital Twin are used by manufacturers. Moreover, the usage areas of Digital Twin in smart manufacturing will be introduced and application examples in various sectors will be presented. Finally, opportunities, challenges, and the future directions of Digital Twin in manufacturing will be discussed.
