The purpose of this study is to analyse the concepts of subject and subjectivity <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">focusing on Selim Işık and Turgut Özben, who could both be positioned as the <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">protagonists of Oğuz Atay’s Tutunamayanlar. These two characters are compared in <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">terms of their experience of subjectivity referring to the Foucauldian concepts of <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">subject and power and Althusserian concepts of subject and ideology. This study <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">basically discusses how free the characters really are in their search of subjectivity. <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">This study argues that Turgut Özben was subjected to Foucauldian power until <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Selim Işık’s death and never attempted at a quest for subjectivity as a subject <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">responsible for his own deeds. Selim Işık, however, is claimed to have set out on a <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">quest for his own subjectivity. Özben does not get out of the ideology he is born into <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">whereas Işık prefers to question it at the expense of his life. This study discusses the <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">possibility of subjectivity considering Turgut Özben’s insanity and Selim Işık’s <span style="font-size: 12.6px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">suicide.
