Summary

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE APPLICATIONS IN BEEKEEPING

ABSTRACT: Artificial intelligence is defined as the science and engineering related to the development of smart machines, especially intelligent computer programs. Artificial neural networks, heuristic algorithms, fuzzy logic, and expert systems are commonly used artificial intelligence methods. Artificial intelligence algorithms developed using these methods are utilized in many fields such as finance, healthcare, agriculture, education, transportation, tourism, and more. In agriculture, artificial intelligence-based methods are utilized, particularly in areas such as production planning, plant classification, yield estimation, identification of plant diseases, pests and weeds, irrigation management, determination of animal behaviors, detection of animal diseases, and formulation of feed rations. These methods can also be applied in beekeeping, which is not only an alternative source of income in rural areas but also holds importance in terms of ecological balance. As a result, the increase in productivity in beekeeping can lead to higher production of bee products, thereby enhancing a country's competitiveness in the bee product market and increasing the income derived from beekeeping. In addition, the use of artificial intelligence applications is crucial in preventing the decrease in bee populations, especially due to climate change, and ensuring sustainability in beekeeping. This study aims to evaluate the artificial intelligence applications used in beekeeping. Within this scope, applications developed with commonly used artificial intelligence methods have been presented by utilizing studies available in the literature. Artificial intelligence applications enable the monitoring of beehives in beekeeping, allowing remote control for managing colony health and productivity. Within this context, it has been identified that artificial intelligence applications can be utilized in areas such as tracking bee feeding patterns and honey production estimation, assessing health status, determining nutritional needs, hive strength, and diagnosing diseases.

Keywords: Beekeeping, artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence applications, precision beekeeping
