Evaluation of Parents Perspectives on Extraction-Based Orthodontic Treatment for Patients Under 18: Survey Study

ABS TRACT Objective: This study aimed to investigate the reasons why parents refuse extraction-based orthodontic treatment and to evaluate the impact of using visual materials during treatment plan explanations on their perspectives toward such treatment.Material and Methods: A 15-item questionnaire was administered to the parents (n=195) of patients receiving orthodontic treatment at the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Ege University.In addition to collecting demographic information such as gender, age, education level, and income, participants were asked whether tooth extraction was necessary in their child's orthodontic treatment, whether they would accept treatment if extraction was required, and how their opinions changed after viewing photographs of previously treated extraction cases.Results: The increase in acceptance rates among parents who initially refused extraction-based orthodontic treatment after viewing the case photographs was statistically significant (p<0.001).The primary reason for refusal was reluctance to have a healthy tooth extracted (71%).Among parents who had been informed about the treatment plan by their orthodontist, the most common reason for continued refusal was uncertainty about the treatment outcome.No statistically significant relationship was found between educational level and treatment acceptance (p=0.254).Conclusion: Most parents expressed concern about the potential impact of tooth extraction on their child's overall health.However, presenting the treatment plan with the support of example case photographs and visual materials positively influenced parents' perspectives and increased their acceptance of extraction-based orthodontic treatment.
