Summary
This book chapter comprehensively addresses the potential role of artificial intelligence in the education of learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the opportunities and ethical dilemmas presented by this technology. The integration of AI into education has been a significant turning point, particularly for learners with ASD, giving rise to both innovative possibilities and concerns. The technological revolution in education, while enabling personalized learning, raises new questions about teacher-student interaction, independence-dependence balances, and human-machine interaction. A careful balance must be struck between supporting the development of students with ASD and the risk of dependency that may arise from the overuse of AI. In this context, empathetic AI technologies respond sensitively to emotional needs while also bringing with them concerns about dependency and uncertainty in human-machine interaction. The chapter offers recommendations for the responsible use of these technologies.
