The Open-End Winding Induction Motor supplied by a Dual Inverter (OEWIM-DI), is currently an attractive solution to enhance performances and efficiency of modern electric traction systems. However, the use of a dual inverter leads to issues such as increased losses, overcharging of the DC bus voltage, the presence/appearance of Zero-Sequence Voltage (ZSV), Zero-Sequence Current (ZSC), and common-mode voltage. This article proposes an Improved Selective Harmonic Elimination (ISHE) method based on modifying the locations of the switching angles, along with a modified Newton–Raphson method utilizing stochastic initial vector generation, to enhance OEWIM-DI performances. The proposed techniques were implemented on an FPGA board and validated experimentally on a 1.5 kW OEWIM-DI drive fed via a common DC bus. The results were compared with those obtained using the space vector Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), optimized decoupled discontinuous PWM and conventional SHE. The comparisons demonstrated that the proposed ISHE strategy reduces switching losses without degrading power quality, despite the presence of ZSV and ZSC.
