Summary

This article analyzes location of the education and knowledge criterion with the concepts included in Marx’s and Weber’s stratification theory. According to Marx, the white-collar workers occupy a contrary class location in the relations of production, and they are inevitably exposed to exploitation in the capitalist production mode organized for making profit. Although Marx accepts that the white-collar workers earn better wages than the others, he still claims that this is a temporary case and the white-collar workers will lose their advantage due to the increasing demand for qualified labor, the expansion of educational opportunities, and the developing division of labor in the production. Under capitalism workers, are treated just like any other commodity, to be bought and sold in the market place for the lowest possible price. Weber differs from Marx in identifying the class only not in the production, but in the consumption, or rather according to its situation in the market. Classes are identified with a particular form action that seek to maximizing their return on the market. He defines classes in terms of the differential access to market rewards. Weber stress more than Marx class advantages that flowed from education or knowledge.
