Özet

Universities’ research, education, and societal contribution functions are shaped not only by their institutional structures but also by the personal characteristics and management practices of their administrators. This study aims to examine the relationship between managerial hubris (an excessive self-confidence that manifests as managerial arrogance), populist management, and the banality of evil within the context of university administration. The study is structured as an interdisciplinary literature review that brings together sources from philosophy, logic, critical thinking, psychology, sociology, and management sciences. The review claims that if hubristic traits, such as excessive self-confidence, resistance to criticism, personalization of institutional decisions, and in-group favouritism, are combined with populist management practices, institutional transparency, merit, checks and balances mechanisms will be weakened. This process may pave the way for the banality of evil by normalizing practices that violate the law and the public good. The study proposes strengthening checks and balances mechanisms in universities, increasing transparency in decision-making processes, and developing administrators’ critical thinking competencies.
