Summary

The coronavirus, which emerged in 2019 and first appeared in Wuhan, China’s

112

Hubei province, has spread rapidly around the world. The name of the disease caused by the

virus was first named 2019 Novel Coronavirus and then COVID-19.

As of 08.07.2022, at least 558,769,507 people in the world were infected with SARS CoV-2 virus

and at least 6,369,256 of them died due to COVID-19. According to the report of the Turkish

Medical Association Central Council in April 2022, the number of healthcare workers who lost

their lives due to COVID-19 disease from the beginning of the pandemic until 28.02.2022 is 506,

physicians account for 34.0% of deaths due to COVID-19.

Aim: Healthcare workers are important components of the health system. It is important for

health workers to be healthy, to provide safe care and to control epidemics in the community.

The aim of this study is to investigate the experiences of a physician infected with COVID-19.

Methods: This descriptive qualitative study was conducted in 2022. Verbal and written informed

consent was obtained from the participant in order to conduct this study. Data were collected

with a semi-structured interview form. Analysis of the data was done using content analysis.

Results: Dr. T.K, male, 44 years old, with 18 years of medical experience, works in the Anesthesia

and Reanimation Intensive Care Unit. Based on the narratives of Dr. T.K; the categories “fear

and anxiety”, “fighting COVID-19”, “feeling abandoned during clinical quarantine”, “support of

teammates in intensive care”, “recovery: second opportunity” and “back to work” were created.

Ethical Evaluation and Conclusion: According to the results of the findings, living, breathing

again was like a gift. It was a second opportunity to heal, to hold on to life. It underlines that the

participant’s approaches to the meaning and value of life, while still approaching the fine line of

death, should always be prioritized by life. Apart from the physicians, the supportive approaches

of all healthcare professionals in the intensive care process make us think that the medical team

draws the greatest strength from each other. This positive motivation positively affects the participant’s

holding on to life. In addition to the support of the medical team, it would be ethically

correct for health managers and politicians to take the necessary measures to reduce the impact

of the pandemic on health workers in the high-risk group in cases of epidemic diseases such as

COVID-19.

113
