Özet

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to isolate and characterize microorganisms capable of

degrading phenolic compounds from refinery wastewater and evaluate their biodegradation

efficiency.

Methods: Microorganisms were isolated from refinery wastewater and contaminated soil.

Their phenol degradation capabilities were assessed through sequential passaging in a Bushnell

Haas Yeast medium with increasing concentrations of phenolic compounds. Molecular

characterization was conducted via 16S rRNA sequencing. High-performance liquid

chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyze degradation efficiency.

Results: Two bacterial strains, identified as Microbacterium sp. and Brevundimonas sp.,

exhibited significant phenol degradation potential. Microbacterium sp. completely degraded 2,4-

dinitrophenol within five days under optimized conditions. Successive passaging increased

tolerance, ensuring degradation rates exceeding 95% at high phenol concentrations. Mixed cultures

demonstrated a synergistic effect, accelerating phenol degradation.

"MacroFrontiers 2025: 3rd International Conference on Macromolecular Compounds"

dedicated to the 105th anniversary of the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University

April 24-25, 2025

248

Conclusion: The isolated strains offer an efficient and environmentally friendly

bioremediation approach for industrial wastewater treatment. Their application in industrial

settings could significantly reduce phenolic pollution.

Keywords: phenol degradation, refinery wastewater, bioremediation, Microbacterium sp.,

Brevundimonas sp..

Acknowledgements

This research was supported by the SOCAR/PETKİM-Star Refinery University-Industry

Collaboration Project and Ege University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit (Project

number: 21723).
