Özet

Recently farmers in Turkey started to use minimum tillage and sometimes direct seeding since the cost of fuel is affecting their budget. We, researchers, should supply the information to the farmers for adapting these techniques well. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of minimum tillage and direct seeding methods on the second crop maize (Zea mays L.) for the comparison of the conventional method in Menemen located in the west region of Turkey. In this research, conventional tillage, three methods of minimum tillage and direct seeding were applied in dry and wet soil conditions after harvesting previous crop of wheat. The minimum tillage methods were rotary tiller; chisel and rotary tiller combination; and heavy duty disk harrow. The effect of tillage methods on the soil physical properties such as bulk density, penetration resistance, and infiltration were examined. Tillage speed, slip, fuel consumptions, seedling emergence, plant height and yield were measured for the effectiveness of the tillage method.

Keywords: Second crop corn, Conservation tillage, Direct seeding
