Cis-4a,10b-dihydrophenanthridine derivatives have been prepared in high yield nucleophilic addition of a functionalised metalated arene to (benzene)tricarbonylmanganese(1+) hexafluorophosphate(1-) followed by reactivation, and intramolecular nucleophile addition.
