Scientists have long sought more practical technologies using alternative materials in various fields. Since its inception, nanotechnology has garnered significant interest and enabled rapid progress in development. In the medical field, the early, sensitive, and quantitative characterization of biomarkers has been a priority for the early diagnosis and treatment of numerous diseases. In recent decades, engineered inorganic nanoparticles have greatly advanced this field and have been used successfully in theranostic applications. As a result, there has been a growing focus on magnetic nanosystems, such as particles, wires, and tubes, due to their abilities, including in vivo deep magnetic targeting, magnetic resonance imaging, point-of-care diagnostics, chemotherapy, hyperthermia, bioseparation, and controlled drug release. This chapter focuses on recent developments in magnetic nanosystems, highlighting the functionalization processes using various organic and inorganic biomoieties. Additionally, it discusses the potential of magnetic nanosystems and their derivatives for magnetic detection in biomedical diagnostics. Finally, it considers the main limitations and concerns in using magnetic nanosystems and future prospects for improving their performance in diagnostic applications.
