Özet

Background: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a complex sleep disorder and the role of genetic factors is not clear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate gene polymorphisms of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) receptor 2A (HTR2A) 1438G/A and NADPH oxidase (P22PHOX) A930G in OSA patients, and assess the correlation of these polymorphisms with OSA severity. Methods: In this case-control study, 691 patients underwent polysomnography were evaluated. After excluding the patients with obesity and severe comorbidities, 220 patients [75.5% male, mean age 48.3±12.8 years, body mass index (BMI) 26.6±2.5 kg/m2 and apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) 28.6±23.2 events/h] were recruited, including patients with AHI <5/h (non-OSA group) and AHI ≥ 5/h (OSA group). Results: Out of 220 patients, 42 (19.1%) were in the non-OSA and 178 (80.9%) in the OSA (20.8% mild, 28.1% moderate and 51.1% severe) groups. The frequency of NADPH oxidase (P22PHOX) A930G and 2A (HTR2A) 1438G/A polymorphisms showed no significant difference between non-OSA and OSA groups. However, the frequency of NADPH oxidase (P22PHOX) polymorphism GA genotype increased and GG genotype frequency decreased with OSA severity but did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: The present study shows no difference in terms of gene polymorphisms between non-obese patients with and without OSA although the frequency of NADPH oxidase (P22PHOX) polymorphism GA genotype increases and GG genotype frequency decreases with OSA severity.
