Özet
To evaluate the frequency and reasons of preference of restorative materials by dentists via a survey. A questionnaire was prepared and an internet-access link was created. The survey was applied to dentists (n=1159) working actively in Turkey between 2021-2023. The age, gender, title, profession, number of years worked, institution of employment were asked. In addition, twenty questions were included about the restorative materials. The participants were asked to rate the used materials in different cavity types between 1 (least preferred) to 5 (most preferred). The data were recorded and SPSS 21.0 (Statistical Package Program for Social Science) was used for statistical analyzes. The composite was reported to prefer by an average of 36.3%, amalgam by 14.62%, glass ionomer by 15.65%, inlay-onlay by 12.77% and crown by 20.67% among the participants. The most important reasons not to prefer amalgam were determined as unaesthetic (73.9%), patient's unwillingness (67.7%), unavailability in the clinic (50.1%) and mercury content (46.6%), respectively. The most common problems in composite restoration were inadequate contact and contour (69.4%) and postoperative sensitivity (65.0%). The 45.9% of the participants declared amalgam restoration and 43.7% declared composite restoration as biologically safe. The usage of amalgam rate was lower than the composite, but amalgam was still mentioned indicated for some certain situations. Although composite was highly preferred, the physicians reported some problems during and after the restorative procedures. The biological safety of composite seems to be questioned at a similar rate as amalgam.
