<p>Colonial Echos in German Literature: A Postcolonial Reading of the Novel Tropen. Der Mythos der Reise by Robert Müller </p><p>This article is dedicated to analysing the novel Tropen. Der Mythos der Reise by the Austrian author Robert Müller from a postcolonial perspective. In his novel, Müller reveals colonial ambitions as well as traces of German colonial history and interweaves them with the representation of the foreign and the exotic. This study therefore aims to embed the novel in the historical and political context of German colonial history and to analyse the colonial discourses from a postcolonial perspective. The main focus is to reveal which cultural stereotypes are formed and reinforced through encounters with foreigners and what role they play in the construction of colonial identities. The study also deals with the concept of mimicry, which appears in Müller's work as a means of constructing identity and at the same time reveals ambivalent effects on the power relations between colonizers and colonized. The legitimisation of violence, which functions in the novel as an expression of colonial mechanisms of domination, is also subjected to critical analysis throughout the study. By emphasising the multi-layered representation of colonial motifs and their complex links with the narrative of the novel, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the colonial discourses that permeate the work. The article thus offers a comprehensive reading that not only makes the colonial implications in the novel visible, but also illustrates the relevance of postcolonial theories for analysing German-language literature.</p>
