Özet
<p>Over the last couple of decades, lifestyles worldwide have undergone significant transformations. Urbanization, technological advancements, prolonged working hours, and increasing individualization have collectively led to a paradigm shift. Presently, we find ourselves spending approximately 75% of our day within indoor environments. Prolonged exposure to enclosed environments poses various risks, both natural and man-made. Among these hazards is radon gas which is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The aim of the study is to measure indoor radon levels in schools, calculate the radiation dose (annual effective dose) for students, teachers, and staff spending time in these schools, and compare the obtained data with international reference values. For this purpose, three primary school in the Bornova district of Izmir province were selected and indoor radon measurements were performed LR 115 Type 2 solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). Following the determination of indoor radon concentrations, exposed radiation doses were calculated and interpreted in terms of international reference values. Annual effective dose values ranged from 0.53 to 8.32 mSv y-1, all of which fell below the recommended limit established by ICRP (3-10 mSv y-1).
