Özet

Objective: This study was planned as anobservational study to determine nurses' practices to measure blood glucoselevels.Materials andMethods: The study was conducted between December 2016 and June 2017 in auniversity hospital. The study sample comprised 60 nurses who worked in theinternal diseases and surgical clinics, and intensive care units of auniversity hospital and were observed how they measured blood glucose levels. To collect the study data 2 tools were used: One of them is the"Observation Form" developed in line with the literature. It includesthe steps in the measurement of blood glucose levels. The other tool is the “Personal InformationForm” which consists of items questioning nurses’ sociodemographiccharacteristics such as age, gender, clinic they work in, clinical workingexperience, and education situation. The data obtained from the study wereanalyzed in the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: Monitoring the nurseswhether they performed blood glucose level measurement steps appropriatelydemonstrated that 90% of them did not ask patients whether they washed theirhands before the procedure. While 60% of the nurses participatingin the study did not clean the patient's fingers with alcohol-soaked cottonwool, of the nurses who did it, 21.7% wiped the finger with dry cotton woolwithout waiting for the alcohol to dry, 45% did not press down the finger to bepricked, 100% used a single-use lancet, cleaned the first blood drop with drycotton wool, put the next blood drop on a test strip, loaded the test stripinto the blood glucose meter, placed a piece of dry cotton wool on the prickedfinger and put away the materials they used appropriately. Conclusion: In the study, it was concluded that the participating nurses did notperform the asepsis principles required for the blood glucose levelmeasurement. It is recommended that in clinics, standard procedures to measureblood glucose levels should be developed and that documents containing thesteps of the procedure should be prepared.
