Background and aims: It is thought that to determine and eliminate needs of the mother would be effective in decreasing stressful situation. Aims: The study was designed phenomenologically in order to be able to examine in a deep and detailed manner the needs of the mothers with a child admitted to intensive care Methods: The study was carried out at a children’s hospital in Izmir between October 2013 and December 2013. In-depth face-to-face interviews were held with the mothers (n=9) included in the sampling group. The structured interview form developed by the researchers and tape recorders were used for collecting the study data. The qualitative content analysis was made on the interviews put into writing by constituting categories and themes. Results: In the content analysis made, the characteristics for perception, need, physical environment and attitude of the health worker, lifestyle, feelings and methods of coping constituted the themes. The parents perceived intensive care as a place where children are well cared for, where interventions are made and where an interest is taken. The needs of the parents are related to not being able to see the child, uncomfortable environment, a place to stay and a need for information. Parents stated that they were afraid and felt bad, but despite this, they did not lose their hopes. Whereas, the methods of coping were separated into the categories of religious belief, distracting attention, sharing, morale and support. Conclusions: This qualitative study will provide for the needs of mothers being understood by health personnel.
