Özet
The new communication technologies today, have an important place in our lives. Together with the usage of these technologies, the traditional communication techniques and features have also changed. These changes are affected on different social fields and every age group of the society especially youth. The communication milieu of today resulted as the new social relations being developed over various communication techniques. One of these is one of the most effective chat tools used in Turkey and in the world: MSN. Young people can communicate instantly and share files and media while chatting with each other over MSN. This program is widely used as it is fast, visual, and free of charge and provides effective communication. In our age, MSN has become the communication type which serves every age group and goes beyond the limits of location. In this study, the effects of socio-demographic variables on the MSN usage of the youth are examined. The research is performed with intentional sampling method, on MSN using youth in randomly selected internet cafes in 3 regions of Izmir with different income level. Young people from Alsancak, Gaziemir and Camdibi localities were made to enter samplings in equal numbers. Data was obtained by survey method that was applied on totally 150 people. In this study, the importance of MSN Messenger program on the social lives of the youth was aimed. The obtained data shows that the residence is important on MSN usage. Youth in both low and high socio-economical levels tend to use MSN intensively for various needs but their tendency reasons are different. The place of MSN in everyday life becomes more important with the increasing age. Similarly, the education level also increases the usage frequency.
