Özet
Hermann Hesse is one of the most important writers of the twentieth century who critically approaches the Western world and seeks solutions to the identity crisis of the Western individuals by turning to the Eastern thought systems. The Eastern narrative in Hermann Hesse's novels contains deep meaning, in terms of providing information about the Crisis environments in the West and the course of the West, rather than a desire to find solace in the Eastern Other or an ordinary cultural ground and imperialist goals. In this context, the study aims to reveal the influence of Eastern thought systems on Hermann Hesse's novels. It analyzes Hermann Hesse's works such as Siddhartha, Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth, Narcissus and Goldmund, Between the Wheels, The Glass Bead Game and Steppenwolf in terms of characters and thematic elements. The texts highlight how the spiritual dimension of Western modernity fails to align with human nature and how materialist values have risen to prominence. In this regard, it is emphasized that the values offered by the East, and Especially Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism, are more compatible with human nature, both individually and collectively. As a result, Eastern thought in Hesse's novels is seen as an alternative solution that must be synthesized in the face of skepticism toward the ideal of Western progress and moral decay. It is suggested that to overcome the impasse faced by the fragmented Western individual and to achieve wholeness, there must be an incorporation of spirituality and experiences in learning, as seen in Eastern thought, along with a reevaluation of humanity's relationship with nature. Structured Abstract:In Germany, Eastern ideas began to attract significant interest during the interwar period, and there was an increase in translations of Eastern Asian texts, especially Indian ones. The easier access to the spiritual and philosophical aspects of the East had a great impact on German thinkers and writers of the time. However, this influence never resulted in a pure allegiance to the East. For Western writers and thinkers, the East was seen as a solution or escape route in the face of the spiritual crisis within their own civilizations.Hermann Hesse is one of the most important writers of the twentieth century who sought a solution to the problem of Western identity by turning to Eastern philosophical systems, offering a critical understanding of the West and the Western individual.Throughout his life, Hesse shared similar concerns with his contemporaries and sought ways to escape the struggles of his time in the East.In this sense, Hesse's engagement with Eastern thought in his works should not be seen merely as an interest or affection for a fictional image, but as the effort of a writer seeking to resolve the growing social and individual conflicts in the West.
