ABSTRACT A compact and low‐cost Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) cavity‐backed spiral antenna is proposed for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications. The antenna is designed to achieve stable circular polarization and high efficiency within the GNSS band (1.164–1.61 GHz, | S 11 | < −10 dB). Unlike conventional metallic cavity‐backed spiral antennas that suffer from coupling and radiation distortion, the use of an FSS‐backed cavity effectively minimizes mutual coupling and improves radiation performance. The artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) structure, which is placed at the bottom of the cavity, decreases overall height of the structure. The fabricated prototype, with compact dimensions of 70 mm × 70 mm × 30 mm, exhibits an axial ratio below 2 dB and a stable realized gain around 4 dBic across the GNSS band, demonstrating comparable or superior performance to traditional designs.
