Özet

Climate change and heat stress both directly and indirectly affect animal productivity and welfare. Factors such as a decrease in feed consumption, decrease in water resources, immune system, decrease in areas used as pasture, and more epidemic diseases are important factors. The impact of climate change on different sectors such as livestock and agriculture is one of the current problems due to the increasing need for food of animal origin, especially for the increasing population. The estimated loss of animal production due to global warming in developing countries is around 25 %. In the twenty-first century, the main priorities of human beings are food and water security, and with the increasing population, the demand for food production, especially of animal origin, is increasing day by day. Unusual climatic events such as increasing temperature and drought are affecting the available forage and dense forage production. In addition to this negativity, heat stress negatively affects fertility, milk, meat and egg production, and quality characteristics. As a result, the immune system weakens in animals and the incidence of diseases increases on a farm basis. In the short or medium term, livestock farms need to develop new strategies against global warming and heat stress. Otherwise, it is not possible to talk about sustainable production. Farm animals try to cope with different stresses using behavioral stress responses. Therefore, a better understanding of animal behavior is possible with proper herd management and animal welfare. To summarize, it is necessary to evaluate the behavioral response of the animals to the environment, to determine the stressful conditions faced by the animals in the enterprise, and to ensure that the animals complete a healthy production period by applying care-feeding strategies that will minimize them. In this study; after the direct and indirect effects of climate change on small ruminant (sheep and goat) farms are given, the strategies that can be applied against the negative effects of climate change and heat stress are discussed and some suggestions are presented.
