Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the sonoelastographic findings of parotid, submandibular and thyroid gland in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome. Material and methods: In this study Siemens Acuson S2000 ultrasound device with 9 MHz transducer and Hitachi Avius ultrasound device with 13 MHz transducer are used. The patient group consists of clinically proven primary Sjögren's syndrome and the control group consists of healthy individuals at same age range. Initially the neck was examined with gray scale ultrasound by same operator without any clinical information. The examined organs were left parotid gland, left submandibular gland, left lobe of thyroid gland and left sternocleidomastoid muscle at same depth. Color Doppler and spectral Doppler ultrasound were used in glands' major vessels. Finally all target organs were examined by sonoelastgraphy. The color map findings and strain ratio measurements were compared and statistically analyzed. Conclusion: Sonoelastography is a new and developping technique by which the soft tissue stiffness can be measured. In this study, sonoelastography of salivary glands in primary Sjögren's syndrome is promising as a simple and noninvasive method to support the clinical findings for the diagnose.
