Summary

Potential evapotranspiration (EPOT) refers to the maximum amount of evaporation and plant transpiration that can occur from a surface with no limitation of water availability under prevailing atmospheric conditions. This concept typically yields higher values compared to actual evapotranspiration and serves as a fundamental reference in water balance analyses. As one of the most critical inputs in water balance models, EPOT enables stable flow projections in conceptual rainfall-runoff simulations when estimated consistently. This study aims to evaluate alternative EPOT equations that can be integrated into a parametric model known as the Dynamic Water Balance Model (DWBM). Although the Penman-Monteith equation is widely used in the literature, this study compares 12 different EPOT equations within the DWBM framework based on hydrological performance criteria. The research was conducted in the Sarıgöl Afşar Dam Basin, and acceptable EPOT equations were identified using statistical methods. Additionally, the presence of equations requiring fewer meteorological inputs and offering practical applicability was examined. Results indicated that the temperature-based Hamon equation provided the most consistent performance. Therefore, in regions with limited data availability, the use of the locally calibrated Hamon equation is recommended as a practical and reliable approach in water balance modeling studies.
