Summary

Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe or Çakıcı Efe, 1872-1911, a fairy-tale character whose life story has been variously told in novels, popular songs, movies and plays, appeared as a bandit for 13 years around the Aegean cities of İzmir, Aydın, Manisa, Denizli and Muğla, especially the center Ödemiş and its environs as his main base of action. As one of the legendary bandits of the Aegean region, Çakırcalı, albeit his mythologized name has been an incessant subject for comparisons with similar such characters emerged before his time in other parts of the world- is a legend unique to Turks and his times. In this study shall be examined in connection with the emergence of banditry in the Aegean region and the life story of Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe in the light of Ottoman archival documents.
