Özet
Greece, which occupied Izmir in May 1919, expanded the occupation area in 1920 and 1921 and advanced to the interior of Anatolia. Having suffered a heavy defeat at the Battle of Sakarya at the end of the summer of 1921, the Greek army lost its offensive initiative, retreated to the west of the Sakarya river and started to defend itself. . The defeat suffered after the Battle of Sakarya caused the loss of trust in the Greek army both among the Greek administrators and among the Greeks living in Western Anatolia and Istanbul. The Greeks of the region, who supported the Greek occupation in Anatolia since May 1919, understood that they could not continue to live in these lands, which would again be under Turkish rule after a possible Greek defeat. As the rumors that the Greek army would withdraw from Anatolia became more and more widespread, the Greeks of the region entered into some structures and studies in order to hold the Greek-occupied territories. The prominent Greeks of Izmir, who gathered around the metropolitan Christotomos, established an organization called the Asia Minor Defense Organization (Mikrasiatiki Amina) in October 1921. The main goal of the organization was to organize the resistance of the Anatolian Greeks and to carry out studies aimed at establishing an autonomous state in Western Anatolia. Initially, Greece, which did not like this organization and this idea, had the idea that until mid-March 1922, England would intervene in the situation in Anatolia and revise the Treaty of Sèvres and impose it on the Turks. However, Greece, which could not see the support it expected at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the allied states held in Paris on March 22, 1922, began to make plans for the evacuation of Anatolia. Greece, which plans to establish an autonomous state based in Izmir and affiliated to Greece in Western Anatolia if it leaves Anatolia, has contacted the Asia Minor Defense Organization and supported the organization. As a result, autonomy was declared in Western Anatolia on July 30, 1922. In this study, the reflections of Greece's declaration of autonomy in Western Anatolia on the Turkish press will be scrutinized and evaluated.
