Summary

This study extensively examines the process of performing piano literature on the qanun instrument, using Erik Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 as a primary example. Features such as the limited range of the kanun's sound and the use of articulation pegs make it challenging to perform piano pieces on the qanun. Additionally, tonal changes and frequent use of altered tones in the pieces also restrict the technical abilities of the qanun performer. This study investigates the specific techniques and practical applications required for performing piano literature on the qanun. In this context, factors such as suitability of pieces, range of sound, tonal changes, and use of altered tones are examined. The research is conducted with the aim of enhancing the technical skills of qanun performers and enabling them to effectively perform piano pieces. The findings provide a significant guide on how piano technique can be applied to the qanun instrument. This study contributes significantly to the literature examining the combination of piano and qanun instruments in music education. In addition to benefiting music educators and students, the research may also guide future similar studies. The article includes information on the main characteristics of the Impressionist period, along with the life and creativity of Erik Satie, one of the period's popular figures, the history of the qanun instrument, information related to piano technique, and the notation of Erik Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 adapted for the qanun. The aim is to provide a preparatory environment for the performance of suitable piano pieces on the qanun through the example studies prepared for the study.
