Özet

Meat is an important source of protein in human nutrition and therefore has a key role in our

food culture. Globally, there were 1.21 billion sheep and 1.05 billion goats, representing

approximately 12% of ovine production in 2018. However, the main reason for the less

increase compared to 2017 is; the higher consumption of beef and poultry, especially in

developing countries. When an evaluation is made according to the continents, the number of

sheep and goats in Asia, the world, respectively; constitutes 43.6% and 55.4%. This is due to

the increasing demand for red meat and milk, which are animal protein sources in the world.

In Europe, the total number of sheep and goats in 2019 was 75 million heads, accounting for

15% of the total livestock. Lamb is the most economically suitable product for sheep

breeding, followed by dairy products and fleece. In goat farming, the main products in the

market are milk and various cheeses. Although the share of sheep and goat products in terms

of animal production is small, this branch of production also helps to maintain local traditions

and protect the environment in many marginal rural areas. However, sheep and goat meat

production in European countries are increasingly suffering from international competition

and weakness in the domestic market. On the supply side, the seasonality of consumption and

the uneven production of carcasses in the meat market create new market opportunities for the

majority of imported products. Due to insufficient sheep-goat production in the region, they

mostly have to be imported from New Zealand and Australia. This situation makes imports

permanent. When the situation is evaluated in terms of demand, the lack of attractiveness of

sheep and goat meat especially among young consumers, and the shifting of meat

consumption from red meat to pork and poultry are among the factors that cause the decrease

in sheep and goat meat consumption in Europe. In this study, the reasons that limit the

consumption of sheep and goat meat in EU countries are emphasized and the factors that

affect them are discussed. In the study, the results of previous research and the data published

by the relevant institutions were used.
