Geographical indications are industrial property rights which are protected designation of origin or protected geographical indications. The geographical indications that added value to the products are important in terms of regional development, preservation of product quality, increase of producer’s income, consumer’s quality and consumption of products that they know. The number of animal origin food protected by the European Union (EU) is 664 until today. 234 of them are cheese and other dairy products, 174 of them are meat products, 164 of them are fresh meat, 47 of them are fisheries, 34 of them are honey and one of them is egg. It is seen that France has the largest number of geographical indication protections for foods of animal origin from the period of 21 June 1996 when first geographical indications were protected throughout the EU until now, the total protected foods of animal origin of France are 163 (24.55%). Turkey has no geographical indication food of animal origin which are protected throughout the EU yet. However, there are 11 application for protection from Turkey to the EU, and 4 of them are foods of animal origin which are meat products. Whereas, there are 18 foods of animal origin which are protected throughout Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in Turkey. Furthermore, there are 51 geographical indication applications for food of animal origin in Turkey. In order to provide adequate contribution of geographical indication food of animal origin to producer income and regional development, producers should produce geographical indication for food of animal origin according to its distinguishing characteristics, relevant institutions and organizations should conduct geographical indication protection process in the EU, and policy makers should ensure an effective traceability, control and governance system through legislative regulations.

Keywords: Geographical indication, food of animal origin, Turkey, European Union
