Özet

This study evaluated the applicability of membrane-based NF/RO treatment for using geothermal water in mushroom cultivation. The suitability of geothermal water treated by a pilot-scale NF/RO system as a water source for Pleurotus ostreatus was investigated, and the effects of different boron (B) concentrations in the treated water on growth parameters were assessed. Geothermal water taken from the reinjection line of the İzmir Yenikale geothermal heating plant was treated in the pilot NF/RO system, and the permeates were mixed with tap water to obtain irrigation waters containing 0, 2, 5 and 7 ppm B. These waters soaked wheat straw, selected as the cultivation substrate, for 72 h. Then the straw was drained, filled into 1 kg polypropylene bags, sterilized in an autoclave at 121 °C for 90 min. and inoculated with spawn. The bags were incubated at 25 °C in the dark until mycelial growth was completed, after which the temperature was lowered to 17 °C to promote primordia and cap formation under 500 lux illumination and 80-90% relative humidity. Under these conditions, mycelial growth period, days to primordia formation and first harvest, and yield were monitored. Irrigation waters with different B levels did not cause a marked change in mycelial growth or yield. Mycelial growth lasted 15.7-15.9 days, primordia formed in 19.0-22.7 days, first harvest occurred in 28.0-30.1 days, and yield ranged from 162.2 to 191.4 g. The findings indicate that 0-7 ppm B does not adversely affect mycelial growth, primordia formation, earliness or fresh yield of P. ostreatus.
