Background and aims: Pneuomothorax is a life-threatining condition which may develop spontaneous, secondery to trauma or due to high pressure ventilation, invasive interventions or ressucitation in intensive care units. It must be urgently treated by tube toracostomy (TT) which is a challenging surgical procedure performed usually by thoracic surgeons. Aims: A new safe and easy to use know-how product catheter is designed for intensive care units, emergency units, ambulances and outpatient sites for use of all medicians. In this study first experimental results of this cathater are discussed. Methods: Six, 1-year-old suis domesticus were used. 20cm scalpel introduced into pleural space through 6th intercostal space to make hemopneumothorax. After 5 minutes following injury, half of the subjects underwent traditional tube thoracostomy and the others treated by new catheter. All of the subjects underwent transvers thoracotomy to evaluate intrathoracic organ injuries. All procedures were approved by the Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee of the Sutcu Imam University. Results: There was no difference for right and left side application of new catheter. Time required for intervention was shorter for the new catheter group (p<0.05). There were no iatrogenic intrathoracic organ injury in both groups. There was no need of any instruments for newly designed thorax catheter application. Conclusions: This study showed this safe and easy applicable new catheter, is a great white hope. It may be used by all practioners safely even for underdiagnosed pneumothorax. We expect this new catheter will make great help in emergency and intensive care units short of a thoracic surgeon. Further experimental studies are mandotary.
