From a classical novel to a graphic novel: Sabahattin Ali’s Madonna In A Fur Coat as a case study

This study aims to analyze the graphic novel version of the book Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali from Gideon Toury’s descriptive translation studies perspective. The novel was written in Turkish and again translated into a graphic novel in Turkish, making it an intralingual translation and also an intersemiotic translation which is translated from words into illustrations and words again, letting us take the illustrator as the translator. In this study, it is intended to approach to an intersemiotic translation with the Toury’s Descriptive Translation Studies. In this respect, both versions, which are novel and graphic adaptation, will be examined qualitatively through descriptive translation studies following these three norms: initial norms, preliminary norms, and operational norms. More precisely, the very first aim of this study is to explain in which way the classical novel is translated into a graphic novel. In addition to this, our study aims to reveal the characteristics of a graphic novel such as having a plot that can stand alone (they exhibit some aspects of discontinuity, they are not serialised), use of emanata, including deep themes symbolism, and an intense plot. By this mean, in this study, the characteristics, which are afore-mentioned, gains and losses, and the decisions which are made by the illustrator will be analyzed in the graphic novel version of Sabahattin Ali’s Madonna in a Fur Coat translated by Gökçe Erverdi and published by Everest Yayınları as a case study.

Keywrods: Sabahattin Ali, Madonna in a Fur Coat, Gideon Toury, graphic novel, Descriptive Translation Studies
