Özet
Fishery cooperatives in Turkey and their importance for fishermen.Fishery cooperatives exist in nearly all countries in the world. They are active in both marine and freshwater fisheries as well as in aquaculture and can have a significant impact on making both small scale fisheries and large scale fisheries sustainable.Recently, many fishery economists generally agree that the most promising solution is to adopt fishery management regimes that create private property based systems in fisheries.Fishery cooperatives could be taken into consideration as a substitute for a property rights system. Therefore, cooperation is one of the most effective tools to reach the objectives of fisheries management.Mithat Pasa started the first cooperative movement in Turkey with agricultural credit in 1863 during the time of Ottoman Empire. In Turkish fisheries, Halk Bank began the first cooperative movement in 1942.Although agricultural cooperatives are quite developed, fisheries cooperatives have witnessed very limited development. The academic and technical literature on the subject is also limited, and there is insufficient information available to the interested public. This study presents the current status, objectives, advantages, and processes of fishery cooperatives and deals with their historical development and fundamental knowledge about them. The purpose of this study is also to emphasize the importance of fishery cooperatives related to fishermen and fisheries management.
