Özet

Ionic Capitals, dated 2nd-3rd centuries AD, from Metropolis

Metropolis lies on a shallow hill and its ruins stretch out on the east slope of the hill covered by olive-trees. It is dates back to the Iron Age but it was particularly powerful in Hellenistic and Roman times. The site consists of three areas: the Upper City, or acropolis, with its temple of Ares – the chief God of city; the Middle Town, with its official building such as the Bath-Gymnasium and Theatre; and finally, the extensive Lower City with buildings that date mainly to the Roman period. In his writings, Strabo explains that Metropolis is 120 stadia from Ephesus, and one of the Ionian cities (the ancient region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day western Turkey). Indeed, it is just about 35km north of Ephesus, and on any discerning archaeo-visitor’s route.

The article focus on eleven ionic capital from different section of city. They are mainly belongs 2nd - 3rd cent. AD and their scales indicate that they were produce for civic buildings like peristyle villa located south slope of Hellenistic theatre (Plan 1). Capitals have common features with West Anatolian samples especially with Ephesus where is neighbour city of Metropolis.
