Özet

Aim:Roll-your-own(RYO) cigarette smoking is common among low-income groups and rural areas due to its price advantage. Based on data from a small number of local studies, RYO cigarette smoking prevalence is high in some regions of Turkey. We aimed to evaluate the effects of RYO cigarette smoking on basic spirometric parameters and clinical features of COPD patients. Method: All male COPD patients followed in our outpatient clinic in Nizip district, Gaziantep, Turkey during one year (n=310) were included in this cross-sectional study.Demographical, clinical and spirometric data was collected from hospital records. Detailed smoking history was obtained. Results: 146 patients (47.09%) were smoking RYO cigarettes and 164 patients(52.90%) were smoking Factory made(FM) cigarettes. There was no significant difference in age, clinical characteristics, smoking history and comorbidities between two groups. RYO cigarette group were mostly farmers(56.2% vs 19%, p<0.01);had more severe airway obstruction stage(p<0.01) and were more frequently precribed using of long-term oxygen therapy(7.6% vs 0.6%, p=0.002).Spirometric findings were not significantly different between two groups. In the multiple regression analysis, being a farmer and onset of smoking age were associated with spirometric findings. Conclusion: Although we couldn’t find a statistically significant difference in spirometric parameters between RYO and FM cigarette groups, RYO cigarette smoking should be considered in COPD patients. Health care professionals and policy makers should be aware of RYO cigarette smoking prevalence and important health results of this kind of smoking type.
