Özet

Objective: Examining safety measures adopted by mothers with 0 to 6 years-old children against home accidents. Material and Methodology:The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional survey consists of 300 mothers with children in the age group 0-6 who applied to the Child Health and Diseases Branch of Ege University Health Research and Application Centre.Survey data was collected through a questionnaire on sociodemographic characteristics and the "Scale for Describing Safety Measures Adopted by Mothers of 0-6 Years Old Children to Prevent Home Accidents".Findings: 27.7% of mothers are secondary school graduates and 64.3% have never had any training about home accidents.Of children experiencing any home accident 60% are males and 24.0% are in the age interval 2-3.According to scores of mothers in "Scale for Describing Safety Measures Adopted by Mothers of 0-6 Years Old Children to Prevent Home Accidents" there is statistically significant difference with respect to educational status (p< 0.001) and training received about home accidents p <0.04).Conclusion: Findings obtained suggest that parents' educational background and their training in home accidents are effective in reducing or preventing home accidents that children may experience. It is therefore suggested that mothers/families are given training in developmental characteristics of children at these ages, risk factors associated with home accidents, safety measures and first-aid practices.
