Özet

Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate olfactory and gustatory functions and to determine the correlation between cognitive dysfunction and olfactory, gustatory dysfunctions. Background: Olfactory and gustatory function in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) can be impaired due to inflammation and progressive axonal damage. The previous studies did not use more sensitive and specific cognitive tests which compared with parameters as duration of disease, disability, depression and fatigue. Methods: Thirty patients aged 21-50 with MS (15 RRMS patients and 15 SPMS patients) matched with 20 healthy participants for age, sex and educational level. Neuropsychological assessment were performed by Paced Auditory Addition Test (PASAT), Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-revised (BVMTR) and Verbal Memory Processes Test (VMPT; this test is an analogue of the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning test in the Turkish language).Hamilton Depression Scale and Modified Fatigue Impact Scale were performed. Physical disability was scored using EDSS. Evaluation of olfactory and gustatory functions was performed using Quick Smell Identification Test and MediSense Taste Spray Test. Results: RRMS patients showed 33[percnt] olfactory, 40[percnt] gustatory dysfunction and while SPMS patients showed 80[percnt] olfactory, 73.3[percnt] gustatory dysfunction. There was no significantly association with olfactory and cognitive dysfunction however there was a statistically significant association between gustatory function and cognitive assessment tests (PASAT and SDMT). Compared MS patients with normal and gustatory dysfunction there were significantly difference between PASAT and SDMT scores and statistical difference between gustatory test score and PASAT, SDMT tests. Both olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions were correlated with EDSS. Conclusions: The olfactory and gustatory impairment are common pathology in Multiple Sclerosis as a result of neurodegeneration and inflammation. Correlation of both olfactory and gustatory dysfunction with EDSS may be explained by neurodegeneration. The correlation between the gustatory dysfunction and cognitive dysfunction should be examined in larger studies.
