Özet

Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) is an important component of free amino acid pool and found in all organisms including plants. The most important of functions of GABA in plant cells can be listed as; being a nitrogen and carbon source, adjusting cytosolic pH, directing the pollen tube, acting as a signaling molecule, and abiotic and biotic stress tolerance. GABA's function in abiotic and biotic stress tolerance and its role as a signaling molecule are the most studied and intriguing topics among plant scientists. However, despite numerous number of studies, the exact mode of action and mechanisms of GABA in stress tolerance have not been revealed. In this context, we collected and reviewed the latest information in the literature about GABA and abiotic (salt, drought, high temperature, low temperature, heavy metal stress) and biotic stresses, all of which once again emphasized the importance of GABA and the GABA-shunt for improving crop yield and sustainable agriculture.
