A182 Background: Liver transplantation is the only treatment modality for most of chronic liver diseases in children. Reversal of growth failure and malnutrition are critical goals for children who undergo liver transplantation. Aim: Evaluate the growth of pediatric liver transplant recipients Methods: 43 pediatric patients who underwent liver transplantation between April 1997 and January 2004 were included to study. Indications of liver transplantation were cholestatic liver disease (n=15), autoimmune hepatitis (n=7), metabolic liver disease (n=10), viral hepatitis (n=4), fulminant liver failure (n=4), and cryptogenic cirrhosis (n=3). Age at transplantation ranged from 6 months to 16 years with median age of 7.4 years. Patient’ charts reviewed for determined patients’ height SDS, weight SDS, and to calculate body mass index (BMI) at two points: before liver transplantation and cross sectional after liver transplantation. Results: The BMI, weight and height SDS of patients before the transplantation was 17.6±3.7 (12.8-31.1), -0.78 ± 1.4 (-4.2-2.2) and -1.26±2 (-5.75-3), respectively. The weight SDS improved to -0.43 ± 1.2 (1.78; -2.87) at the 2.3±1.5 years after liver transplantation whereas height SDS of patients was not found statistically different than pretransplant values. When BMI of patients was compared, the posttransplant BMI values were found higher than pretransplant BMI values. Recipients aged younger than 1 year showed growth within first year to achieve a height distribution high to that recipient aged older than 1 year. No correlation to primary disease or graft type was identified. Conclusion: Infant recipients showed growth within the first year to achieve a height distribution equal to that of an age matched population.
