Özet

The zurna, almost always accompanied by the hang drum (asma davul), is usually played in traditional contexts such as life-cycle transitional ceremonies or calenderical events and occasional celebrations, as well as non-traditional settings like folk dance competitions or shows, concerts, bars, music programs on the radio or television, or for album recordings. This paper focuses on the relationship between gender and the traditional contexts of zurna music that require varying levels of mastery, yet only touching upon the ensembles the zurna takes place in, the repertoires, the socioeconomical status and working conditions of the performers, and their relations and interaction with patrons and audiences in western Turkey. The reason why only the traditional contexts are to be evaluated is that in urban settings, the audience and patrons may be of any gender and these possible determinants would be obscured. The paper is mostly based on the researcher’s lifelong experience of zurna music in western Turkey and on data collected during fieldwork done between 2009-2017 in the cities of Izmir, Manisa, and Aydın, and with musicians from the city of Mugla.

Keywords: zurna, gender, Western Turkey, davul-zurna ensemble, Abdals, the Roma
