Background: The health effects of wind turbines have become a public health matter. This review was conducted with the purpose of evaluating articles published between 2008-2018 which reveal the associations between wind turbines and health effects. Methods: A PubMed search of the scientific literature concerning the health-related effects of wind turbine was performed during March 2018 using the key words 'wind turbine OR wind energy AND health effects'(N = 83). Articles in English between 2008-2018 were selected. The articles about occupational health and wild life were excluded. The rest of the 42 articles were selected for full text review. After excluding the inappropriate designs (reviews, case studies, guidelines) the remaining 19 publications were analyzed. Results: Eleven-cross-sectional, two cohorts, two experimental, two qualitative, one ecological and one interventional articles were sorted by their main purposes. 14 of the studies were conducted by multiple disciplines. “Wind turbine noise” was the most frequent topic (n = 14). In nine of fourteen, environmental noise was measured with the standards. However, in five studies, indoor or outdoor noise wasn’t measured objectively even though noise annoyance was investigated. In four studies, there was no significant association between noise annoyance and the sound. Five of the studies had dose response relationship. The studies about “Perception and psychological aspects” (n = 10) showed that negative attitudes and personal perceptions of hazard determine the annoyance of wind turbines. “General health complaints” (n = 9), “sleep disorders” (n = 8) and “shadow effect” (n = 2) were the other main categories. Conclusions: The occurrence of various health effects related to wind turbines is up to dose and distance. Most of the results show that annoyance of wind farms depends on individual factors. There is need for prospective cohorts. Before the stage of planning and construction the social concerns should be considered. Key messages: The occurrence of various health effects related to wind turbines is up to dose and distance. Most of the results show that annoyance of wind farms depends on individual factors. Before the stage of planning and construction of the wind farms the social concerns should be considered.
