Özet

Background: 28% of adolescents have tried tobacco smoking at least once (WHO Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2017). Prevention of smoking initiation is more critical than cessation efforts in terms of primary prevention. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and frequency of smoking initiation among adolescents aged 11-17 years in Turkey and to determine the relationship between these variables and sociodemographic characteristics.

Methods: In this study the data from the 2017 GYTS was utilized including 122.040 participants. The analyses were performed on 114.543 participants and analysed separately in males/females. Dependent variables; attempt to smoke tobacco and smoking tobacco in the last 30 days; independent variables; age, gender, weekly school allowance, parental education level and parental employment status. Descriptive statistics were analysed using numbers, percentages, means, and ± SD with pairwise comparisons by using chi-square. The data was analysed using SPSS version 25.0. A significance level of p<0.05 was used.

Results: The age groups were ranged from 11-younger to 17 year-olds. All participants mostly spent in moderate level; their fathers were mostly primary/secondary educated (50.3%). Among all participants; tendency to use tobacco increases as age increases; as weekly spending money increases and having a mother who is the only employed parent. Only in males; tendency to tobacco use of adolescents increases as their fathers or mothers’ education level decreases. The frequency of tobacco-use increases with age among occasional smokers and increases with the amount of weekly allowance.

Conclusion: Maternal working-status, low level educated parents and socioeconomic levels are the risk factors that should be considered when developing smoking cessation interventions for adolescents.

Funding Source: No financial resources were utilised for this study.

Ethical Statement: This study was derived from the available open access data of WHO Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2017.

Conflict of Interest: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Keywords: Tobacco use, adolescent, sociodemographic characteristics.
