Özet

Security and privacy are critical aspects of today’s Data Age. In this environment, access

control is an essential requirement to protect the security of data. Access control enables to limit

and control unauthorized access to data resources. Therefore, access control is an important

topic and a challenging problem to ensure confidentiality and integrity. Semantic Web allows

machines to share and reuse information by using formal semantics to communicate with other

machines. Semantic Web is used as an integrator that associates data concepts and enables the

interpretation of the data. Thus, Semantic Web-based applications are used in various domains.

The evolution of technology, the rapid growth of connected systems, the increased use of

Internet and the growth of the global datasphere have drastically changed the digital

environment. In this context, serious security and privacy concerns are raised due to the

increased number of users who require to access data. Also, representing knowledge with the

highest degree of semantic richness has gained importance for data integration, data

interoperability and contextual data interpretation. This chapter aims to present a Semantic

Web-based approach to construct an efficient and flexible access control solution. For this

purpose, the related terminology and access control models will be described. Also, Semantic

Web concepts will be presented to address security and privacy issues under the scope of access

control. Further, the recent Semantic Web based solutions for creating access control policies

and controlling access to data resources will be examined. Finally, future directions and

challenges will be discussed by outlining the current technological innovations with respect to

access control management systems and Semantic Web-based solutions.
