Özet

Fiber type and fabric structure are well known to play a crucial role in determining the thermo-physiological comfort of knitted fabrics. In this study, plated single-layer, double-faced single jersey fabrics were engineered to enhance thermal comfort by promoting effective heat and moisture transfer, making them suitable for intensive activity and sportswear applications. Ten plated fabric samples were produced using cotton, polyester staple, polyester filament, and Coolmax® staple yarns under identical knitting machine settings. The fabrics were evaluated in terms of air permeability, thermal resistance, thermal conductivity, water vapor resistance, moisture management capacity, fabric weight, thickness, and stitch density according to relevant international standards. The results demonstrated that staple-based and engineered fibers produced more open fabric structures with higher air permeability and improved thermal insulation due to increased air entrapment, whereas filament-based structures exhibited higher thermal conductivity and reduced breathability. Fabrics incorporating hydrophobic or engineered fibers on the inner (skin-contact) side and hydrophilic cotton on the outer side achieved the highest overall moisture management capacity, confirming effective one-way moisture transport within a single-layer plated structure. Overall, the findings indicate that plated single-layer single jersey fabrics can provide thermo-physiological comfort performance comparable to that of conventional double-layer knitted fabrics while offering advantages in terms of lower weight, reduced thickness, and improved flexibility.
