Özet

This study aims to examine how STEM professions are represented in Turkish picture books. Conducted as a document analysis, the current study examine picture books based on their representations of STEM professions. Within the scope of the research, 19 picture storybooks were selected through the criterion sampling method and analyzed via content analysis in terms of their relevance to STEM topics. The researchers developed checklists and structured analysis forms were completed accordingly. In the first phase of the analysis, the physical and visual characteristics of the books, along with their content features, were reviewed with the aim of reaching a high-quality research group. In the second phase, the focus was placed on how STEM professions were represented within the narratives. The findings reveal that the depiction of STEM careers in picture books holds the potential to offer children positive role models. Findings indicate that picture books intentionally avoid dominant gendered and occupational stereotypes, using inclusive and realistic depictions of scientists and engineers to counteract implicit biases and support broader STEM professions imaginaries in early childhood. Although some stereotypical patterns remain, a considerable number of books present counter-stereotypical professional representations, suggesting potential for promoting diversity-affirming attitudes toward STEM professions.
